Vilhelm Lauritzen, a master of functionalist architecture who blended classicism and modernity

1894-1984

Vilhelm Lauritzen has the dual identity of architect and designer. He is not only one of the most influential architects in Denmark, but also the spiritual leader of functionalism. Many buildings in Denmark were designed by him, and the first flight of Kastrup Airport was designed by him. The building is a classic work of Lauritzen's modernist style, and ranks with Radiohuset as the leading representative work of European art, culture, and architectural modernism.

Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, which he founded in 1922, is Denmark's most representative architectural firm today. No life without aesthetics is his unwavering belief. For him, architectural design is the best way to display art.

Vilhelm Lauritzen's designs in the 1930s adhered to classicism. Later, he traveled to Europe many times, which made him better understand functionalist architecture. Since then, the design concept of his works has been based on functionalism. Although he is an architect, his designs span the fields of furniture and lighting. The most widely known is the VL series designed for the broadcasting building in Frederiksberg and produced by Louis Poulsen.
