The well-known Danish designer Poul Henningsen is famous for his multi-layered lampshade design and the "PH" series of lamps. He pioneered the method of presenting lighting through indirect transmitted light sources, reaching the illuminated area through the surrounding masking design, thereby producing a soft light source. , is his most famous classic.
Henningsen designed a total of no less than 40 types of PH lamps throughout his life. Although these lamps have different shapes, they all embody his design principle: use light to create an atmosphere. You will not see a direct light source from any PH lamp. They are all soft and suitable soothing light colors. This is the wonder of PH lamps. Henningsen was the first designer to design lamps based on the scientific functional principles of lighting.
The trumpet-shaped shade at the top of the PH 5-4½ & 6½-6 pendant lamp prevents light from below from shining upward. The symmetrical design allows the light source to evenly diffuse soft light, and a blue glare ring is added to prevent glare from all angles. The direct light is directly under the lamp, and the lampshade painted with white matte ensures that the space has the most ideal and comfortable lighting.
PH series lighting is precisely calculated to direct light only where it is needed most, using incandescent bulbs as the light source to create soft shadows. This kind of design was often used in museums, exhibition rooms and spaces with high ceilings in the past.
The reason why Henningsen emphasizes the softness of light is precisely because he believes that "the most beautiful moment of the day is dusk." The role of lamps is to extend the light of dusk into daily life. It is said that the elegantly curved shade of the PH lamp was inspired by a set of stacked cups, bowls and plates.
The PH four-layer lampshade was launched in 1931. It was designed to increase the brightness of light emitted horizontally, providing a better light source for walls and bookshelves than the PH three-layer lampshade design. Over the next 40 years, Louis Poulsen removed the PH four-layer lampshade design from the standard product line. In 1979, it was redesigned by two Danish architects, Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen, to create a larger size for the Charlottenborg exhibition building in Copenhagen. PH 6½-6 chandelier, while the PH 5-4½ was designed in 1984 for the Aarhus Concert Hall in Denmark.
